What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure in which fine, short needles enter the skin for the purposes of rejuvenating the skin. At Face It, we use the SkinPen by Bellus Medical to perform this treatment. The SkinPen is the first microneedling device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars on individuals ages 22 and up.

How Does The SkinPen Work?

SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. This results in effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. This is completed in three phases:

• Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
• Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
• Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

When Will I See Results?

Results from Microneedling with the SkinPen depend on the severity of the condition when treatment is started and the way in which it was performed. Results are typically very noticeable following a few treatments.
